Bowman Consulting acquires Texas engineering firm Terra Associates

Bowman Consulting, a national engineering consulting firm, has acquired Terra Associates, a Houston-based civil design and engineering firm.

Founded in 1979, Terra Associates provides services in civil engineering, surveying, economical design, project management, and permitting for projects in traffic and transportation, water and wastewater, landscape and irrigation, office and industrial facilities, and multi-family developments.

The firm has more than 30 professionals across offices in Houston and San Antonio.

Bowman’s acquisition of Terra will strengthen the firm’s Texas presence with new offices in Houston and San Antonio, complementing previous locations in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Marcos, and Waco.

“We have been intent on growing our Texas operations and this acquisition, following closely on the heels of our acquisition of 1519 Surveying, fortifies Bowman’s presence in the Lone Star state. Terra’s experience in commercial site work, transportation design and utility district services are highly complementary to our portfolio of services and align with our growth plans and evolving market demand,” said Gary Bowman, CEO of Bowman.

Bowman last week acquired 1519 Surveying, adding 35+ professionals in Waco and Fort Worth and bolstering its capabilities in land surveying, aerial imaging, GIS mapping, 3D laser scanning, and civil engineering.

Bowman – which has 950 people across more than 35 offices in the US – in May completed a $51.7 million initial public offering and began trading on the Nasdaq. The Reston, VA-headquartered firm delivers services in planning, engineering, construction management, commissioning, environmental consulting, geomatics, survey, and land procurement. The consulting firm works in the building, transportation, power and utilities, water resources, and mining markets.

“The opportunity to be a part of an entrepreneurial public company is both exciting and energizing. We are all looking forward to the future as a Bowman company,” said Vickie Henkel, CEO of Terra.

The Terra transaction is expected to close at the end of this month, adding an estimated $5.5 million of annualized net service billing, according to a press release from Bowman. The deal will bring the firm’s annualized acquired revenue in 2021 to $36 million.

The Terra deal is Bowman’s sixth acquisition since its IPO and its seventh acquisition in 2021. The firm also in December acquired Kibart, a Towson, MD-based building engineering firm with more than 35 employees.
